Message from the Coordinator
To Our Students:
Welcome to the Howard Alternative Placement
Program. While attending the Howard Alternative
Placement Program (HAPP), we want you to be safe. You are not permitted on the campus of any of
the other schools in the district. For
your own safety and benefit, you are not allowed to attend any extra-curricular
activities on other campuses; such as, dances, ball games, plays, practice
sessions, etc. These rules are in place
to help you focus on your academics and on your behavior.
The HAPP educators will be encouraging you to
focus your complete efforts on your assignments in our google classroom. Your home-school and Howard Alternative
teachers will be working together to develop an educational plan that will help
you become successful and help you to return to your home school with a
ready-to-work attitude, prepared to be promoted to the next grade level.
Also, while attending the HAPP and after you
return to your home school, I need you to develop a trusting relationship with
a mentor or guidance counselor who will enable you to think of ways or
strategies that will help you reach self-discipline or self-management. Once self-discipline is obtained, you will
become successful, as noted in the book, How
Children Succeed, (Tough). We all
need to be able to manage our time, thoughts, and behavior. According to the Harvard University Center on the Developing Child, executive
function and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to
plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks
successfully.
I hope that your time here at the HAPP will
allow you to look back at your past experiences, acknowledge what part of the
scenario you were responsible for, and devise a plan that helps you to make
wise choices.
Again, welcome to the Howard Alternative
Placement Program. We will meet in room
200A to discuss any problems. Parents
are invited to attend.
Respectfully submitted,
Reginald B Thompson, Ed. S
